Welcome

I was introduced to the idea of a writing journal in a workshop that I took. I found it very useful to track progress and keep my thoughts straight during the first book. I've transferred the journal here in case anyone wants to follow my progress.

Writing Day

9/23/2019 – Chapter 10. Micah arrives at Isan and runs into some challenges with the commander there. He finds out information about Darius and must plan his next steps. This chapter was challenging as I try to evolve Micah’s character. I have some ideas about where I want to go with him ultimately and the type of soldier he is trying to be. Some of the challenges he will face will change him but I want to be slow and intentional with those changes.

In other news I still haven’t gotten my critics report back from BookLife yet. They are supposed to announce the winners today. I’m hoping that either I get the report back today or they delay the announcement until after all books have been evaluated.

9/23/2019 – This is writing day. I finished chapter 10. I have also decided that I will write a new chapter one. I want to start the book with Micah’s perspective on the battle that ended the first book. I’m hoping this will create a better hook for the first chapter than the current chapter one does.

It's been hard finding time

Continuing on with Chapter 8. So far, based on the first draft word counts it’s looking like I’m going to need about 32 chapters to meet the first draft goals. That said, it’s also likely that at least a couple of the early chapters will need to be divided up. In other news, I’m up to 8 reviews with Nasu Rabi which is encouraging. The Kirkus review comes back October 7th and the BookLife first round results are supposed to be posted on September 23rd so I should have the critics report back from that in the next week or two. Writing has been hard the past couple of weeks. The kids are back in school but they’ve been coming into our room at night which means I haven’t been getting much sleep. So, I’ve been too tired to concentrate at night. My writing has mainly been limited to the few hours I can fit into our busy schedule on the weekend. My goal is still to finish the first draft by Thanksgiving but it’s going to be tight. I have a couple of “writing days” coming up September, 20th; Columbus Day (Oct 14), and October 25th. Hopefully I can catch up then. I should also have extra time on Thanksgiving weekend to do some final wrap-up…hopefully it’s just final wrap-up. Finally, I’m going to run a promotional holiday giveaway for Nasu Rabi through the month of October so I have some prep work for that as well.

Writing and research

It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to write. Earlier in the weekend I did research on 2020 book fairs, conventions, and comic cons. There are a couple of applications that are coming due this fall and I wanted to get a jump on them. Also, I wanted to calendar when other registration deadlines are coming up. Today I’m going to try to write for a couple of hours while the kids are at the park. POV for chapter will still be Micah as well as the Emperor.

The plot thickens

8/24-8/26/2019 – Chapter seven focuses on Micah. Overall I cover a lot in this chapter. If I flesh it out more during the second revision this chapter may end up getting split up. There are five separate scenes in the chapter so there is plenty of opportunity to separate it out.

Making progress

8/19 - 8/21/2019 – It took a couple of days but I finished chapter six. Checking back in with Darius to see how he is doing. We’ll leave him for a couple of chapters now and join back up with him in the fall. The next couple chapters will cover events back in Eridu.
